#1 Installing Windows XP on Newer Laptop (Coffee Lake S) by sqpp 01.09.2019 14:55

Hey.

So I am trying to install Windows XP on a T480 with has an Intel i5-8350u CPU.

I know laptops are not recommend to do so, but I still want to continue. So basically what the setup fails is the blue screen with the ACPI compliant error (0x000000A5) BSOD.

Is there any workaround to resolve this?

Am I missing the AHCI-SATA drivers? Not sure which one should I integrate using the nLite here? Can someone tell me which should be the correct version?

Thanks a ton.

@sqpp

BSOD A5 is an ACPI error

If you're using XP 32bit we have a patched acpi.sys driver

Windows XP SP3 32bit and modern PC parts (139)

If you're using XP 64bit we are working on it

Unfortunately, I have 8GB of RAM so not sure if that's gonna fit my needs.

How about the 32 Bit with the windows xp pae patch? That should work?

Also, how should I include the acpi.sys in case with nLite?

@sqpp

it depends on what you want to do with XP

pae patch will let an individual 32bit program use up to 4GB each

but pae patch wont allow you to run 64bit programs - you need XP x64 for that

Really just for testing purposes, not really for daily use, but I have also found a 64 bit acpi.sys in that forum. In case I want to risk it and check if it's working how to include this so installation can go ahead?

@sqpp

there is a few things you need to do to integrate the 64bit acpi.sys driver

grab cabpack 1.4 -
https://www.techspot.com/downloads/7104-cabpack.html

in cabpack 1.4 point it towards acpi.sys
for example

Source Dir or File:
C:\ACPIPATCH\ACPI.SYS

Destination Dir:
C:\ACPIPATCH\

CabinetNameTemplate:
ACPI.SY_

once you have ACPI.SY_ you copy it into your XP I386 folder and replace it

Secondly, there is usually a backup copy of acpi.sys in SP2.CAB SP3.CAB and/or DRIVER.CAB (i forget which) that will need replacing

So for example, use 7zip to extract SP3.CAB to a folder - C:\ACPIPATCH\SP3

copy C:\ACPIPATCH\ACPI.SYS into C:\ACPIPATCH\SP3 and overwrite it

then with cabpack 1.4

Source Dir or File:
C:\ACPIPATCH\SP3

Destination Dir:
C:\ACPIPATCH\

CabinetNameTemplate:
SP3.CAB

now that you have ACPI.SY_ and SP3.CAB, copy them to your XP I386 folder and overwrite.

then rebuild ISO with nlite.

Thanks a ton :)

@sqpp

I forgot to mention,
if your on XP64 the folder is amd64 not I386

Yes, realized :D I was searching a bit. but found. Also, it was the DRIVER.cab that included the acpi.sys file.

@infuscomus Regarding the SATA drivers, do you have any clue which one to use? The universal I guess?!

#11 RE: Installing Windows XP on Newer Laptop (Coffee Lake S) by infuscomus 01.09.2019 16:02

@sqpp

the universal driver is OK to use

#12 RE: Installing Windows XP on Newer Laptop (Coffee Lake S) by sqpp 01.09.2019 16:31

I don't think it's gonna work, seems to fail everytime (but not the same message though like earlier)

Update, now it's not had any error, but failed again with the same BSOD code

#13 RE: Installing Windows XP on Newer Laptop (Coffee Lake S) by infuscomus 01.09.2019 16:44

@sqpp

if your using XP 64 try this -
Windows XP SP3 32bit and modern PC parts (147)

#14 RE: Installing Windows XP on Newer Laptop (Coffee Lake S) by sqpp 01.09.2019 16:56

Yes, that's the one I actually used, but no. It fails with the same code.

@sqpp

OK, post in that thread and let diderius6 know of the problem
