Hi, first of all, sorry for replying to such an old thread but maybe you can help me.

I have an Asus Z170-A motherboard and a Xeon 1220 V5 (Skylake 6700K equivalent) in another motherboard. Will any of the modified bioses posted here would enable me to install Xeon e3-1220 V5 in Asus Z170-A ?

Thanks in advance for any insightful comments!

@avatarr - haswell and before Xeons will work with Z170, but skylake xeons only work with c23x chipset
So answer is generally no, you need another board for that CPU and another CPU for this board.

However, I do see this - Use the E3 V5 series CPU method on the H110 B150 Z170 motherboard.
Do you have a currently working CPU for this board, so I can make you ME Disabled ME FW for you to flash in?
If so, then yes, I think we can do, but keep in mind until you get a flash programmer you can't go back (ie can't enable ME FW again) without programmer or pinmod (live short to unlock FD)

What is your current BIOS version, and what is your current ME FW version? You may need flash programmer or pinmod no matter what, if ME FW is newer than 11.6, I think maybe only 11.0 works based on page 5 comment by user where I made him BIOS (post #68)
Once we get ME FW to correct version, and disabled, then you can use BIOS from this thread if you wanted.

@dsanke - is PRO at this V5 and Z170 BIOS, and knows a lot about Asus, so I'm sure he can tell us specific versions of stuff you need other than what I've mentioned.

Hi @Lost_N_BIOS ,

thank you for your extensive reply.

I have a working CPU for that board. Will check the bios version and ME FW later on and get back to you.

You need SPI programmer to flash modified BIOS or recover from brick.
And I can't say the modified BIOS is perfect.
It may can not do non-K BCLK OC , may can not boot from UEFI or it may can only boot once.
Here is the link : ASUS Z170-A Modified BIOS for Xeon E3 v5 and v6 series
flash via SPI Programmer , make sure you have your BIOS dumped properly , and use FD44editor or other tools to write your SN/GBE MAC before you flash.

Hey @Lost_N_BIOS I'm wondering if there's a modded BIOS for the Asus Z170-A as I just got an i5-8600k and I kinda don't want to shell out another 100 for a new motherboard :P. Plus this motherboard looks really nice. Sorry if I'm replying on the wrong section I'm fairly new here. My best experience was updating the bios of my motherboard.

Hello there @Lost_N_BIOS,

iam wondering if theres a modded ASUS PRIME B450M-K bios with HPET please? Kinda annoying that ASUS doesnt have this option in BIOS. Thank you.

edit. continue #53 @Lost_N_BIOS

Hello again, I am sorry for not replying for long time, but I gave up the first time. I am really new to all this, but I have decided to give it another try as I am now really desperate. Please be patient with me.

Step 1. I downloaded the tool Flashprogramming Tool V11 and made bios region backup.
Attached is the file. (edit. I can not upload file larger than 6MB here, so please use this link:

What should i do next please ? You wrote to Rename your .efi file to >> Shell.efi.
But where do I find this file ?

Thank you very much

@Hanjo - You need to do the following - Please link me to your stock BIOS download page, and tell me what BIOS version you want edited so I can download a stock copy

If you have already modified the BIOS in ANY way, you will need to re-flash it back to factory defaults using factory method (NOT FPT)!!!
Additionally, please remove all BIOS passwords, disable secure boot, and disable TPM or Encryption if you have enabled. Do this before moving on to below

If you do not have Intel ME drivers installed, install them now from your system driver download page, then start over here after reboot.
Check your BIOS' main page and see if ME FW version is shown. If not then > DOWNLOAD HWINFO64 HERE <

Once HWINFO is open, look at the large window on the left side, expand motherboard, and find the ME area.
Inside that section is the ME Firmware version. Take note of the version. (ie. write it down or get a screenshot)

Once you have that, go to the thread linked below, and in the section "C.2" find and download the matching ME System Tools Package for your system.
(ie if ME FW version = 10.x get V10 package, if 9.0-9.1 get V9.1 package, if 9.5 or above get V9.5 package etc)
> DOWNLOAD " ME System Tools " packages HERE <

Once downloaded, inside you will find Flash Programming Tool folder, and then inside that a Windows or Win/Win32 folder (NOT x64).
Highlight that Win/Win32 folder, then hold shift and press right click. Choose "open command window here" (Not power shell! >> * See Registry file below *).

If you get an error, reply to this post with a screenshot of it, OR write down the EXACT command entered and the EXACT error given.

((If "open command window here" does not appear, look for the "Simple Registry Edit" below...))

Step #1

Now you should be at the command prompt.
You are going to BACKUP the factory un-modified firmware, so type the following command:
Command: " FPTw.exe -bios -d biosreg.bin "

>> Attach the saved "biosreg.bin ", placed into a compressed ZIP/RAR file, to your next post!!! <<

Step #2

Right after you do that, try to write back the BIOS Region dump and see if you get any error(s).
Command: " FPTw.exe -bios -f biosreg.bin "
^^ This step is important! Don't forget! ^^

If you get an error, reply to this post with a screenshot of it, OR write down the EXACT command entered and the EXACT error given.

Here is a SIMPLE REGISTRY EDIT that adds "Open command window here as Administrator" to the right click menu, instead of Power Shell
Double-click downloaded file to install. Reboot after install may be required

If the windows method above does NOT work for you...
Then you may have to copy all contents from the Flash Programming Tool \ DOS folder to the root of a Bootable USB disk and do the dump from DOS
( DOS command: " FPT.exe -bios -d biosreg.bin " )

Below will apply to you as well. You will need to disable BIOS lock, following the guide I link below, but you have to wait until I give you the proper variable to use (variable mentioned below does NOT apply to your board/BIOS, I have not looked at your BIOS yet)
Can you already see >> Advanced >> PCH-IO submenu?

@Rj7 - It's OK, I get way behind here, and am never in a hurry about anything because I can never keep up, so late reply is OK here
BIOS in #19 cannot be used by your model, sorry, I made that post long ago before I realized stock BIOS should not be used in that way with FPT (erases your serial, UUID and NVRAM etc)
I will make you mod BIOS once you send me your BIOS region dump, which looks like you have above. You will need to make a new one though, after you disable BIOS lock, so you can move onto that step now

Here is guide on disabling BIOS Lock or SMI Lock etc - you need to start at step #6, I will give you info below that you would normally get yourself in step #1-5
Please remove all BIOS passwords, disable secure boot, and disable TPM or Encryption if you have enabled.
Do this before moving on to below, and this must also be done/left done, before you make next FPT BIOS region dump and until you flash in mod BIOS, then after that you can change back to whatever you want.
[GUIDE] Grub Fix Intel FPT Error 280 or 368 - BIOS Lock Asus/Other Mod BIOS Flash

Rename EFI File to (This is attached at end of the guide) >> Shell.efi

BIOS Lock variable to change >> 0x8A7

So, at grub prompt, you will type the following, one line at a time, enter between each (case sensitive)
setup_var 0x8A7 0x00

After that, reboot, do FPT step #1 in above spoiler again, but this time use new name for file (such as biosregnew.bin)
Then confirm changes worked, but trying step #2, you should not get error 368 anymore. Send me the new BIOS region dump to be edited (biosregnew.bin)

I am happy you made time to help me with this. Again I am not very experienced concerning this topic, so I am sorry if I have silly questions.

I have made another BIOS dump after disabling BIOS lock (used GRUB guide from #6 - #16) and then ITEL ME Tools package V11 with command FPTw.exe -bios -d biosreg.bin (i used the same name, which might have been a mistake, but I have the old one saved as well).

Here is the dump file:

#90 RE: ASUS Z170-A HPET Toggle Option by Lost_N_BIOS 14.11.2020 05:51

@Rj7 - Please redo FPT step #1-2 now, with NEW name, this way there is no mix-ups, and you confirm the grab changes you made are there and there was not a mixup already and you flashed back in locked BIOS region by not using new name.
If FPT step #2 passes, send me the file with new name from step #1. If it does not pass #2, start over, follow my directions exactly
