Hey I am about to order the bios programmer. CH341A and a sop16 + sop8 test clip. I seen a video where he wrote using the test clip. I don't want to de-solder. I am needing some bios mods where I can control more things in power. With Intel XTU I can change the turbo voltage but I'm stuck at 130w and 151w for 1 sec turbo. I want those numbers unlocked or edited to max. I am placing heat sinks and fans to the boards VRMs and a fan to cool them so no worries.

I didn't have to de-solder on either the z420 or the z620 boards. YMMV.

Ymmv? I am new to this, I have experience flashing ROMs on my Android phones but not any of this. Could you elaborate? I am in need of help if I could flash bios mods with out the programmer that would be cool. Thanks!

@Jetman6, I have a z420 and would like to add nvme support to my board. I have a ch341a programmer which i used to update the boot block. Could z620 bios you used in earlier messgaes can be used for z420. Could you please upload the file you have for adding z420 with nvme support.

Thank you. I have succesfully integrated the nvme driver into bios. Now system can boot from nvme.

Hello everyone,

Another HP Z420 owner here trying to mod my bios to unlock hidden menus, add NVMe support, and potentially update bootblock region.
I was able to dump the entire chip using fptw -d backup.bin after switching the "ME/AMT flash override" jumper on the motherboard from pins 1 and 2 to pins 2 and 3. (find the dump attached)
Modding the bios was also not a big problem for me thanks to this forum, and a bit of previous successful experience in bios modding. (I attach my modded bios file here as well)
Now trying to flash the chip using fptw -f modded.bin or just the bios region using fptw -bios -f moddedBiosRegion.bin I get the following error in both cases:

Looking in the documentation, I found that another jumper "ROM bootblock header" exists, which supposedly allows bootblock flashing.
When I execute the same commands as above, I get a different error:

fptw version I am using is 8.1.60.1561 as found in Intel ME System Tools v8 r3.
Unfortunately, I don't have the chip programmer (yet) and would prefer to solve it software way if possible.

@milenovic - error 7 I see when BIOS previously flashed with AFU and sometimes cause this issue, or bad BIOS Mod. Please upload ONLY your FPT dumped BIOS region, and then your edit of that BIOS region, in a single zip/rar etc
I will check and let you know if I see any issue. Did you do NVME edit with MMTool or UEFITool (if this, what exact version)?

@jetman6 - So, on Z420 what all mods have you done and flashed in? I see this model has HP Sure Start, which has proven to be a MAJOR pain on many systems, but seems it did not auto recover stock BIOS when you did the NVME mod here, so I wonder if entire DXE volume is not covered by SureStart?

I just added the NVME drivers to the bios with UEFITool. And flashed it with the bios chip programmer. Previously moded the bios to fix the V2 cpu support and faster memory. I had to rewrite the bios and flash it with the bios chip programmer. Chip programmer was my easy way out.

I also did a Z620 the same way. ;)

@jetman6 - Thanks, good to know this model Sure Start isn't as terrible as some other HP models I've ran into this on. ON some models, even with programmer, anything you touch gets automatically re-written post programing on first startup.
Maybe it's not enabled as deeply on those models, or the main DXE volume at least is not protected so surestart does not get invoked.

Firstly, sorry for not being in the know here! I'm pretty comfortable flashing custom software (done a few GPUs bios's, Android ROMs etc) but not sure where to start here.

I've ordered these boards for my new ESXi Cluster and I'm not entirely sure if they support v2 CPU's or not - I'm assuming not.

I've seen mention on here a few times about updating the board to support v2 CPU's which I definitely want to do. I'm not fussed about NVMe support but if its the same amount of work, happy to add it.

First you will need to extract the bios info from each board with a chip reader. Then you will need to rewrite the bios info with a hex edit software. I forget where you need to start this edit, But it is available on the HP forums. I googled V2 cpu support for HP Z420 or Z620 to find the thread that explained it in detail.

Adding nvme is supper simple and the info is on this site.

Once above is complete write the file back to the chip. Don't mix the files, For best results! Do one board at a time. :)
