@phaseshift : Afaik there is no common ground between "IMEs new enough to support Kaby Lake" and "IMEs old enough to not block BCLK-OC". Unlike CFL compatiblity which can be achieved by combining BIOS parts of various ages (old IME, new microcode, etc.) there are no mods known to add BCLK capability.

I created my modded coffee lake bios by using coffeetime 0.83 by doing these steps:
1. Copied 11.7.0.1229 ME region using UEFITool from old bios to newest bios of the Asus Z270 APEX IX motherboard
2. Ran the bios file through coffeetime 0.83 and unlocked all regions

Question: Do I need to put the MAC Address and serial numbers in there from the actual mainboard? Or will doing a flashback procedure auto transfer those details in there?

Asus Flashback will keep current MAC & Co, but cannot write areas locked in currently installed UEFI. So you need flash programmer to write your mod into the board and flash programmer will replace current MAC with whatever you include (or not) in your modded file.

Well thats a problem because the bios chip is soldered. Two of them as this is a dual bios board. I thought flashback over writes everything as on my workstation board the ME gets frequently downgraded when I flashback. Thanks.

@davidm71 - MAC Address can be put in w/ Intel FPT, this is usually not locked. Dump the original, or any one you want to change >> FPTw.exe -gbe -d gbe.bin
Edit the GbE.bin file via hex, usually at 0h is MAC and sometimes copy also at 1000h too, then flash back >> FPTw.exe -gbe -f modgbe.bin

Serial is a bit more involved, but you can flash that back in via USB Flashback or FPT, it's contained in the BIOS region, but may be in multiple files and or locations.
I'd need a dump of working board with it's UUID, serial, and MAC ID info from stickers or WMIC, then I could locate the exact locations in sample boards BIOS and tell you where to edit in other BIOS if you need to change this stuff for another board.
Flashback will leave those in place if you are not needing to change them.

@davidm71 : There are clips available to contact soldered in chips. Most people here have to use these anyway. Flashback usually can overwrite ME as ME region obviously has to be unlocked for updates and any self protect features of ME require the system to boot first, so they are inactive when using flashback. However flash descriptor region does never need an update during a boards lifetime and often gets a lock on the chip itself which flashback cannot cirumvent. To write PCH mod/hack into FD region you need CH134A then. Perhaps you are lucky and your board is fully unlocked (my Z170 Sabertooth is), but more likely you are not (my Maximus VIII Ranger ain't).

Once you flashed an unlocked UEFI using CH134A, you can use flashback for future mods BTW.

Well never had a problem rolling back my ME firmware version on my Asus Z170/Z270-WS boards using flashback. Anyhow I do own a soic clip but read my CH341A may over volt the board and don't want to that on a new board or take the risk unless I have an emergency situation. Afraid I'll connect the soic clip cable adapter for the CH341A backwards or something. Anyhow I think the Z270-WS has a removable bios chip so I may perform the operation on that board instead of the Apex IX board which I bought dirt cheap. The other issue is that my 6700K cpu I own is already more powerful than a i3-8350K so wonder if its worth to this because the performance increase will be less than desired unless I pin mod an i5 or i7 which I'm not sure I want to do. Sounds risky. So planning on replacing my Z270-WS with the Apex board and possibly run the coffeelake mod on the Workstation board instead one rainy day. Looks like a fun project though. Thanks.

Pinmodding for Asus is pretty easy. I have yet to see a system where more than sktocp-mod was requiered (though Apex might be one of them and need a bit of isolation as well). But going through all the hassle for a i3-8350K is probably not worth it, unless you need some special rig to gather HWbot scores. I do not now where you live, but I see brand new IX Apex being sold for more than 250 Euro and well used ones for 130. That's more than enough to just buy a Z390 Edge AC or Z390 Pro4 and if you are lucky, you can score even some Maximus-class Z370 in a sell out and simply run the i3 the way it's meant to be.

CFL modding is a bumpy path and only worth it if you got an upper class, but hard to sell Z170, just do not want to change your board for arbitrary reasons (e.g. I got partly custom made watercoolers for my Maximus VIII and I want to continue using Win7 which is hardly possible with Z390) or want to stick up to Intel out of pure spite. But in your situation it is neither the easiest nor the most economic solution.

I got the Apex IX Z270 board for $90 after rebate. Great deal. I would love to carry out the mod for fun of it though if only there was a performance gain but afterwards would get old fast I'm sure.

I think i got it working thanks to you, a spare bios and a cH341 programmer.

Maximus Ranger VIII and i7 8700.



I will have to test it further since i didn't have a lot of time to try.

So far, IGP is working, PCIe is ok with a vega 56, 4 Ram slots ok.

I have to stress test it more and check the integrated network. I used a wifi dongle during my testing.

So thanks a lot for the tool.

Worked great so far. Tested this on 4 boards in the meantime: Asus Q170M, Gigabyte Q170M, Asrock H110M and Fujitsu D3402. All worked.
Only Fujitsu did something special concerning the VBIOS and GOP. But that could be handled manually.
